My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that the purpose of teaching in elementary schools is… to foster students’ curiosities about the world around them and to instill within them a desire to become life-long learners through relevant and purposeful lessons and activities.
I believe the nature of my students to be… unique. Every child that walks into my classroom brings a unique set of experiences, talents, and abilities with them. No two students are identical, which is why it is important to identify each student's uniqueness and create lessons that align with their individual needs.
I believe students succeed when… they feel that they are a valuable and respected member of the classroom community. Feeling valued and respected holds students accountable and creates within them a desire to succeed. When students develop a desire to succeed that is when they reach their highest learning potential.
I believe technology within the classroom... is an important educational tool that must be utilized in the classroom to extend learning and help students develop 21st century skills.
I believe effective teachers… are reflective and life-long learners. They are always reflecting on their teaching practices and techniques, seeking out new ways to improve their instruction to benefit their students, and collaborating with other professionals. Effective teachers also learn along side students modeling that learning is a life-long process.
I believe instruction should be... student centered and relevant. If instruction begins with a student's inquiry the learning process becomes purposeful and engaging. Making learning meaningful helps students apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world and results in creative and authentic work related to their inquiries.
